Gary Mintz, organizer of the New York Giants Preservation Society, said that at times, the Giants’ legacy in New York absolutely feels pushed aside relative to the Dodgers’. Fred Wilpon, the former Mets owner, designed Citi Field as an homage to the Dodgers’ old home, Ebbets Field, not the Giants’ Polo Grounds of Manhattan. Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote a book about them. Empirically, major figures of subsequent generations have written and spoken more about the Dodgers. All the Broadway theater performers attached themselves to the Giants, not the Dodgers.”īut being Broadway’s flame was not enough to widely sustain the Giants’ legacy. “Hopper became famous for reciting ‘Casey at the Bat’ the first time in public, and then did it 10,000 more times. ![]() ![]() John Thorn, MLB’s official historian, had one name jump to mind, a fellow who died in 1935. “I’ve never thought about this before, but I can’t tell you off the top of my head somebody that’s going to wax nostalgic about the New York Giants, as far as somebody you identify (as),’ Oh, he was the diehard Giants fan,'” Dodgers historian Mark Langill said. ![]()

![]() ![]() (“Kindly asking my body to stop keeping the score,” goes one viral tweet.)Īfter all the anxiety and social isolation of pandemic life, and now the lingering uncertainty about what comes next, many people are turning to a growing genre of trauma self-help books for relief. ![]() During the pandemic, it seems more in demand than ever: This year, van der Kolk has appeared as a guest on The Ezra Klein Show, been profiled in The Guardian, and watched his book become a meme. Here’s one line: “The elementary self system in the brainstem and limbic system is massively activated when people are faced with the threat of annihilation, which results in an overwhelming sense of fear and terror accompanied by intense physiological arousal.”Īnd yet, since its debut in 2014, The Body Keeps the Score has spent 150 weeks-nearly three years-and counting at the top of the New York Times best-seller list and has sold almost 2 million copies globally. The book isn’t academic, exactly, but it’s dense and difficult material written with psychology students in mind. Page after page, readers are asked to wrestle with van der Kolk’s theory that trauma can sever the connection between the mind, which wants to forget what happened, and the body, which can’t. ![]() ![]() Nothing about The Body Keeps the Score screams “best seller.” Written by the psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, the book is a graphic account of his decades-long career treating survivors of traumatic experiences such as rape, incest, and war. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Coretta Scott King Awardwinning Cooper has created a gentle, comforting story that will reassure children that those who love us are always with us." -Booklist "Cooper uses his signature style to illustrate both the landscape-sometimes viewed from the car windows or reflected in the vehicle's mirror-and the expressive faces of his characters. ![]() In Max and the Tag-Along Moon, his lush paintings perfectly capture the wonder of the moon, the love between grandfather and grandson, and that feeling of magic every child experiences when the moon follows him home. His books have also been named to numerous best books list and been given many Parents Choice Awards. Floyd Cooper received the Coretta Scott King Award for The Blacker the Berry, two Coretta Scott King Honors for Honey in Broomwheat Tea and I Have Heard of a Land, and an NAACP image award. ![]() ![]() Yet when the clouds part and light streams through his window, he realizes that Grandpa was right-the moon was with him all along. But when the sky darkens and the moon disappears behind clouds, Max worries that it did not follow him home after all. And on that swervy-curvy car ride back home Max smiles as the moon tags along, thinking of Grandpa. When they must say good-bye after a visit, Grandpa reminds Max that the moon above them at Grandpa's house is the same moon that will follow him all the way home. Has the moon ever followed you home at night? Max loves his grandpa. ![]() ![]() Arcite is released from prison and Palamon escapes they finally fight for Emilye's hand in a tournament. ![]() The plot concerns the rivalry of Palamon and Arcite, Theban knights, who while they are imprisoned by Duke Theseus fall in love with his fair kinswoman, Emilye. The poem is nominally a romance, adapted from Boccaccio's Teseida. 20 The trouble has been in the kinds of assumptions brought to the poem, in an attention to its poor dramatics rather than its rich symbolism, to its surface rather than its structure. The criticism of the Knight's Tale has long suffered from both of these errors. ![]() Similarly, if tradition seems to codify Chaucer's poetry according to a fixed number of general forms in a defined area of style, the particular structure and local style of each poem are unique.Ĭhaucer's conventionalism should neither be dismissed nor taken for granted. We do not read Chaucer, after all, for his philosophical conclusions, but for his workings-out, his poetry. If the themes of most of Chaucer's conventional poems seem to converge toward the single point of recognizing supernal values in human affairs, the nature of the pointing differs with each poem. ![]() A reasonable sympathy with conventionalism requires our understanding that the experience of the idealizing imagination is no less varied than that of realistic observation, and no less true. ![]() ![]() This Buddhist term loosely translates into the word suffering, a feeling of being unsettled, or off kilter. “Before the beginning of great brilliance, there must be chaos.” All other characters, and all incidents and dialogue are drawn from the author’s imagination and are not to be construed as real.Ĭover photo is by Zigroup-Creations from Shutterstockīook formatted and edited by Louise Bohmer:įor Louise Bohmer, my wonderful editor, and for Mary, Debbie, and Diane.
